From Soil to Sustenance: Organic Practices for agricultural sustainability

Intensive agricultural farming system in Pakistan made the soils less fertile and productive. Agriculture is the only sector that full-fill the basic needs of Pakistan increasing population. In order to food security, it is responsibility of agriculture sector to be sustainable and provide food, fiber and shelter to the population. To meet the higher food demands farmers were forced to apply synthetic in-organic chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This not only damaged the natural resources like soil, water and environment but also cast detrimental impacts on human health. Massive utilization of chemical fertilizers became a serious threat to the agricultural productivity and sustainability. Now in this situation, researcher, scientists, policy makers and organizations are emphasizing on the good quality organic food and soil health on sustainable basis. Organic farming is the cheapest and reachable approach for almost all sort of farming communities. But the major concern is whether this approach has potential to provide enough food for Pakistan ever increasing population. Therefore, this review focused on recent advances in organic farming that are helpful in improving crop yields and soil health on sustainable basis. When the organic source is treated or converted into another modified form, results are even better than the conventional application of organic sources. Thus, this review described advanced approaches for organic agriculture farming.
